چکیده

The purpose of the present communication is to describe two patients, one with a congenital extradural and one with a congenital intradural arachnoid cyst of the spine and to review the relevant literature. Congenital spinal arachnoid cyst is a very rare cause of spinal cord compression. It is one of the most favourable spinal lesions for surgical removal and recovery of neurological function. The term congenital is used here in distinction from the acquired variety. Acquired extradural arachnoid cysts may develop after operation when a small tear has been made in the spinal dura, after difficult lumbar puncture and after spinal injury. Swanson and Fincher in 1947 reported four cases of acquired extradural arachnoid cysts after 1,700 exploratory laminectomies-an incidence of0 068 %. Three cases were in the lumbar region and had followed a dural tear during disc removal. The fourth cyst was related to a non-penetrating injury to the lumbar spine. Acquired intradural arachnoid cysts are also associated with spinal adhesive arachnoiditis, although cyst formation is not constantly present in this condition. The congenital intradural cysts are a separate entity and have been described in the literature under a variety of names-for example, spinal arachnoid diverticulae, leptomeningeal cysts, localized adhesive spinal arachnoiditis, and arachnitis adhaesa circumscripta. The appearances of adhesive arachnoiditis are absent on myelography in such cases and, although usually single, the cysts may be multiple.

Multiple extradural spinal arachnoid cysts: a case report and review of the literature

Extradural spinal arachnoid cysts are rare lesions, which may become symptomatic due to mass effect. Multiple cysts are even rarer of which few are reported to date. A 17-year-old male with acute onset urinary retention and progressive paraparesis is presented. Magnetic resonance imaging of spine revealed multiple spinal extradural arachnoid cysts located dorsal to the spinal cord, causing mass...

An Adult Cervical Intramedullary Arachnoid Cyst: Case Report and Review

Spinal arachnoid cysts are uncommon benign lesions that occur in the spinal axis, and can cause spinal cord or nerve roots compression and may become clinically relevant. The authors report a 49-year-old woman who presented progressive onset of cervical pain with distal paraesthesia of the upper limbs associated to an intramedullary arachnoid cyst in the mid-cervical spine diagnosed by MRI. Fro...

Should we operate all extradural spinal arachnoid cysts? Report of a case.

Spinal canal extradural arachnoid cyst is an uncommon, expanding lesion which may communicate with the subarachnoid space. They may be either intra or extradural with intradural cysts being less common. Spinal arachnoid cysts are usually in the thoracic spine, and they may cause symptoms due to spinal cord compression. Although surgery is the preferred way of management, there are reported case...

Paraplegia with lymphoedema - a rare case report

Arachnoid cysts are a congenital disorder, and most cases begin during infancy; however, onset may be delayed until adolescence. Here we present an unusual case of atypical Paraplegia with Lymphoedema, with onset during adolescence and rapid progression in a young female patient who showed the characteristic appearance of cyst on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of spinal cord. This report inte...

Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts: clinical, radiological, and surgical features.

Extradural arachnoid cysts in the spine are rare and are seldom a cause of spinal cord compression. They are thought to arise from congenital defects in the dura mater, and they almost always communicate with the intrathecal subarachnoid space through a small defect in the dura. The mainstay of treatment in patients with neurological symptoms is surgical removal of the cyst together with ligati...
